Review – Chemical Hearts

Title of the Film: Chemical Hearts

You meet! You fall in love! And you live happily ever after! Isn’t this how most of the love stories that we have come across on the big screen goes? We have gotten so used to this made-up fantasy of love, that we have forgotten what it really means to fall in love! Amazon Prime’s new original – Chemical Hearts directed by Richard Tanne and based on Krystal Sutherland’s Our Chemical Hearts, shows us a different side of love. A love where one experiences the joys of falling in love, being in love, heart-break and also growing as person!

Chemical Hearts tells the tale of a hopeless romantic teenager – Henry Page who gets smitten by the new girl – Grace Town who is mysterious, snarky and withdrawn. Still reeling from an accident that messed up her and left her with a cane, Grace find herself opening up to him eventually. As she joins the school newspaper, she and Henry form a unique friendship that soon turns into love. But when the anniversary of her accident come around, that is when this typical love story changes course.

Unlike stories that we have been used, Chemical Hearts is not you cliched love story. It is bound to shake up your version of love. As said by Henry Page’s sister who herself is going thorough a heat-break – “Love is a chemical reaction that comes and goes. But the best news is that so does heartbreak!”. The makers have done an excellent job at showing the good as well as the bad side of being in love which the movies says is caused by Dopamine and Oxytocin. These are the hormone responsible for causing blissed out feelings of love.

What is also commendable is the acting and cast that the makers have chose. Lili Reinhart and Austin Abrams through their excellent performances carry the entire story on their shoulder. Unlike her cheery character from Netflix’s Riverdale, Lili has successfully managed to nail the character of a an injured loner while Austin previously known for his movies like Paper Towns does an excellent job of being a teenager in love! Moving at a comfortable pace, the movie doesn’t follow a traditional route which is like a breath of fresh air.
Final verdict: Watch if you’re looking for love with a different perspective and skip it is cliched love stories are you’re thing!
